In third grade of preschool many families worry because their child still isn't reading. The good news is that reading isn't a requirement for starting elementary school: reading and writing are consolidated in first and second grade. What really makes a difference is a different set of skills.
1. Listening and following instructions
Understanding a two- or three-step instruction given to the whole group — not just to them — and carrying it out.
2. Holding attention
Staying with a task for ten to fifteen minutes without getting up, even when it isn't their favorite activity.
3. Organizing their things
Taking out and putting away their materials, looking after their snack, knowing what's in their backpack.
4. Tolerating frustration
Making a mistake, erasing and trying again without giving up or getting too upset.

5. Expressing themselves
Telling you what happened, asking for help, saying they didn't understand. Philosophy for Children helps a lot here: children get used to speaking in front of the group and giving reasons.
6. Living with rules
Waiting their turn, sharing, accepting that they don't always win.
How to practice them at home
- Board games: turns, rules and learning to lose.
- Errands with several steps: «bring your cup, put it in the sink and wipe the table».
- Letting them pack their backpack the night before.
- Reading to them every day and talking about the story.
The advantage of not changing schools
When preschool and elementary are in the same school, the child starts first grade already knowing the place, the teachers and most of their classmates. The only new thing is the grade, not the whole world.
